The National Weather Service has bumped up its forecasted crest of the Mississippi River in Hannibal next week. The river is now expected to reach 18 feet around noon Wednesday, March 17. It is forecast to remain at that level through at least Thursday, March 18. The moderate flood stage in Hannibal begins at 18 feet. As of 11 a.m. Thursday, the river was at 16.07 feet in Hannibal, which puts it just over technical flood stage of 16 feet.
April-like showers are expected to return to Northeast Missouri and West-Central Illinois over the next couple of days. The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of showers both Friday and Saturday. The rain is expected to end Sunday, but a mostly cloudy sky is forecast. Wednesday’s 60-plus degree temperatures are gone for a while. High temperatures will range from the upper 40s to low 50s through Tuesday before a slight warm up occurs.
A New London man was left with seriously hurt in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday evening in Ralls County. The crash happened at 8:10 p.m. on Antioch Lane at New London, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A 2002 Oldsmobile was being driven south by 32-year-old Clinton Hudelson when the vehicle left the road, overturned and then ran down an embankment. Hudelson was transported by Marion County Ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital.
An Iowa man suffered moderate injuries in a one-vehicle crash Wednesday night in Shelby County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 7:25 p.m. on U.S. 36 west of Hunnewell. A 2007 Chrysler was being driven eastbound by 30-year-old Jeffrey Ross of Iowa City, Iowa, when the vehicle ran off the road and overturned. Ross, who was not wearing a safety device when the accident happened, was transported to Hannibal Regional Hospital by Monroe City Ambulance.
A pair of early Thursday morning power outages in Hannibal are being blamed on the weather. According to the Board of Public Works, the initial outage occurred at 12:30 a.m. The Bay Avenue and Palmyra Road areas were impacted by the outage, which lasted for 26 minutes. The next power loss happened at 3:50 a.m. BPW customers in the Hamlin Heights and Palmyra Road area lost electric service. BPW workers had power back on in 34 minutes.
