Hannibal.net Headlines Feed National Park proposed for New Philadelphia | A historic landmark in Pike County could someday become a national park.
U.S. Sen. Roland Burris has proposed legislation for a study on New Philadelphia, the first town planned and founded by an African-American. The community was formed by Francis McWorter in 1836.
McWorter was born a slave, but purchased his freedom in 1819 before moving to Illinois.
At its peak, New Philadelphia had 160 residents, but it slowly died out after the railroad bypassed it. McWorter died in 1854 at the age of 77.

Hannibal.net Headlines Feed Hannibal seeks to attract manufacturing company | The city of Hannibal is one of several communities in northern Missouri that is in the hunt to land a manufacturing firm. George Walley, executive director of the Northeast Missouri Economic Development Council, told the council’s board about the lead during its Thursday morning meeting in Hannibal.
“I learned about it over the weekend,” said Walley, who did not identify the company.
According to Walley, the company specifically expressed interest in finding a site in northern Missouri.
